Themes and Sub-topics

This conference which will use both English and Filipino as languages of presentation bears the theme “The Seven Spheres of Language Teaching: From Tradition to Innovation”. The seven spheres that constitute language teaching as discipline – matter, methodology, measurement, materials, management, mentors and mentees serve as sub-topics. Each sub-topic highlights three crucial questions which will be addressed during the conference.

  3. What is the role of the first language in learning a new language?

• Methodology (Pagdulog)
  1. When do we concentrate on form/function?
  2. How can we balance accuracy and fluency?
  3. How does ICT Facilitate language learning?
• Materials (Kagamitan)
  1. How are materials designed to address learners’ needs?
  2. What alternative materials can be used by teachers?
  3. What ICT materials or modalities for language learning are available?
• Measurement (Pagtasa)
  1. What should be assessed in a language classroom?
  2. What alternative forms of assessment should we use?
  3. How can ICT be used in language assessment?
• Management (Pangangasiwa)
  1. How should language classrooms be designed?
  2. How are large classes with varying proficiency levels managed?
  3. How can deprived, depressed, and underserved classes be best served?
• Mentor (Guro)
  1. What are the qualities of a good language teacher/educator?
  2. How do we develop inquiring, self-propelled teachers?
  3. How should language proficiency problems of teachers be addressed?
• Mentee (Mag-aaral)
  1. What kinds of language learners do we have today?
  2. How do we develop autonomous learners?
  3. How do we provide for the needs of learners with special needs?
